Karma Atchykah avec Paul Cargnello

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Karma Atchykah is a Montreal native of Haitian descent whose musical quest led him to be one of the most respected and sought after artists to have come out of the city. He voices the ideas and aspirations of the youth with a well-grown sound and a musical blend that we now have come to call: Soul Hip Hop. After releasing numerous street albums, mixtapes and his solo debut Karma Atchykah Presents the Burbs (nominated for Best English Hip Hop Album at the Gala MU in 2006), the raspy voiced MC released his tenth project in March 2010, the critically acclaimed double album Diasporama. The album was nominated for best Hip Hop album of the year in 2010 at ADISQ, GAMIQ and at the Montreal Hip Hop Awards. Following the album release, Karma was awarded the Best Male Artist of the Year award in 2010 at Montreal Hip Hop Awards and was nominated in several categories in the 2011 edition of SOBA (Sounds of Blackness Awards). All his singles obtained heavy rotation on MusiquePlus and MuchVibe. Karma has been developing his career by touring the province of Quebec, performing in several festivals and opening for several international artists.

Sapient “grown up”

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

Sapient, a Portland-based hip-hop producer and emcee, is releasing a new video for “Grown Up,” a song off his 2010 album “Barrels For Feathers.”

The video, directed by Portland filmmaker Shawn Shannon, visually echoes the song’s theme: what it means to grow up. While hip-hop has long tradition of imagining the artist as child — the cover of Biggie’s “Ready To Die” is just one famous example — the video for “Grown Up” also shows the audience as children, reframing the normal scene of a Sapient show with one showing all participants as kids. (Don’t worry; the kids didn’t get real booze.)

The Willamette Week newspaper called “Grown Up” “both relatable and insightful” for its lyrics dealing with the pressures and realities of adulthood. And the production fits right into Sape’s carefully honed, crispy synth style.

More information about Sapient’s numerous projects, including his work with Portland crew Sandpeople and The Prime (Sapient & Luckyiam of Living Legends), can be found at www.sapientkills.com .
